nails & tennis: part 2

nails! and tennis! my two favorite things :) .
you know i cannot resist a pro tennis player who wears nail polish on the courts.  not to say that i only watch women’s tennis for the manicures, but to me it’s refreshing to see female athletes playing hard and caring about their nails too!

this year at the 2011 australian open i didn’t spot a lot of well-manicured players. my girl, the nail diva serena is still injured.  i was kinda looking forward to see her nails–she wore a dark green nail polish during the tournament last year which really got me hyped, especially since she won the championship.  another tennis player i like simply because she has killer long nails, alona bondarenko, is also injured. and most of the other great tennis players don’t bother with the nail polish.

however, there is one tennis player who has managed to make me giddy over her nails: world no. 1 caroline wozniacki.

when i saw her and her nails on tv, i just had to run the the computer and do a google search to find out up close what color she is wearing.  i love this on her.  a bright, bold orange-red crème that coordinates well with the matching  undergarment of her tennis outfit and is perfect for the summer season down under.

i love that she wears these bold colors, i wonder if she is a nail polish addict in the making?

another manicure sighting i liked were these minty green nails sported by the russian maria kirilenko:

ana ivanovic was bounced out of the tournament early, but she stuck around to watch the action and decided to wear a pretty taupe-brown color:

aggie radwanska, from poland, with a flattering tyrian purple color on her nails.  but this picture just makes me LOL:

the face of her racket just broke clean off during a rally!  surely that’s a first!

and though it is a little hard to tell, i spy venus williams wearing purple nail polish as well!  she hardly ever wears nails polish on the courts:

so yea that’s my comeback post lol.  i know not everyone likes tennis like i do, but surely there are some tennis fans out in the interwebs who also happen to share my “obsession” with nail polish, right?  i’ve been ghost for the past week or so, but i’m trying to catch up with reading and commenting on other nail blogs as well as updating my own.  i just started spring semester and had a ton of work to do.  aaaaaand, i had to “nubbin-ize” my nails for clinical so that i wouldn’t cause problems by inadvertently scratching a patient or myself.  well, at least that’s what my clinical instructor told me. so i will be keeping it low-key for a while and probably won’t change my nail polish as often.

thanks for reading!

notd: great expectations

hi!

today i’m sporting an essie nail polish: “great expectations.”  it was released along with 5 other colors in the spring collection of ’07.  i happen to love this collection because the colors are so delicate and pretty.

the only downside is that the shades are a bit on the sheer side.  “great exectations” was 4 or maybe 5 coats– i lost count and just kept adding more coats until it was somewhat opaque.  but, once you get past that, the color is really pretty: a soft dove gray.  there is also a subtle silver shimmer that’s barely noticeable, so it’s not quite a crème finish.

“great expectations” with a bow ^.^  hmm, the polish is looking a little purple-y here which it tends to do sometimes if the lighting and the angles are right.  strange.

as always, thanks for looking!

notd: gold glitz

milani recently put out a new collection of awesome glitters.  i bought a couple of them, but to be honest i am all “glittered out.”  the extra coats of topcoat, the chipping, the removal, ughh.  this will probably be the last time i wear glitter nail polish in a while.  for the new year, MOAR CREMES!!

“gold glitz” is still a nice color though.  it definitely makes up for the fingerpaints “holly good time” that i missed out on late last year.  it’s not exactly a “one coat glitter” as milani advertised.  this was opaque in two, still a whole lot better than some other glitters so no complaints here.

thanks for looking!

notd: nye to nyd mani

hey-hey! happy new year! today is 1/1/11, all aces, pretty neat :-)

i went out last night and this night, so i didn’t have the time to post what i did for my nails for the end of the year festivities. i originally wanted something glitzy and sophisticated with glitter, but i didn’t want to wear full-on glitter because it can be a real pain to remove in my experience.

first, i painted my nails in opi “russian navy,” a dark shimmery navy blue. it has a very nice application. this is two coats:

then i painted glitter french tips with pure ice “spitfire.”   i just dabbed three coats to make it as dense as possible (in hindsight, i would have been better off using loose glitter.)

on the ring fingers, the french tip and half moons are done using 1 and 2 mm rhinestones.  and i also applied rhinestones at the base of the other nails.  the inspiration for the design came from a japanese nail art mag.  i love japanese nail art, even though some of the designs are a little too impractical for my lifestyle.

this might be my favorite nail design i’ve done in a while.  thanks for looking, and again HAPPY NEW YEAR!
